How to Fill Your Fountain Pen with Ink: A Beginner's Guide
Read time: ~4 min
So you've got your brand-new fountain pen and a beautiful bottle of ink sitting in front of you — exciting! But now you're wondering: how exactly do I get the ink in there?
Don't worry, we've got you. Filling a fountain pen is easier than it looks, and once you've done it a couple of times, it becomes second nature. The method you'll use depends on what type of pen you have, but let's start with the basics.
What you'll need
- Your fountain pen
- A bottle of ink (or a cartridge, depending on your pen)
- A clean cloth or paper towel
- Patience — your first fill might take a minute or two!
Step 1: Know your pen type
Before you fill, figure out which filling system your pen uses. The three most common are:
- Converter with ink bottle — the pen uses a small removable converter that draws ink up from a bottle
- Cartridge — the pen uses a sealed ink cartridge that snaps or screws in
- Piston mechanism — the pen has a built-in piston that screws to draw ink directly from a bottle
Not sure which one you have? Check the product page on our store, or keep reading — we cover all three in detail below.

Step 3: Flush any air bubbles
After filling, hold your pen nib-down and gently shake it once or twice. This helps any air bubbles rise and ensures ink flows smoothly to the nib. Give it a quick test on scrap paper before writing on anything important.
Step 4: Clean up
Ink happens. Wipe the nib and grip section with a damp cloth to remove any stray ink before you cap the pen. Your fingers will thank you later.
Pro tip: Always fill your pen over a sink or with a paper towel underneath. Even the most careful writers have the occasional spill. It's part of the experience!
